Bicyclist, 86, struck and killed by car in Kenneth City

KENNETH CITY — An 86-year-old bicyclist died Thursday after she was struck by a car on 66th Street, Pinellas Sheriff's officials said.

The accident occurred just after 3 p.m. at the intersection with 49th Avenue N, deputies said.

Deputies said Bettie Deetz of Kenneth City was riding her bike eastbound on 49th Avenue when a white van turned left from 66th Street to go west. The van blocked Deetz's view of a 1991 Toyota Camry driven by Clay Jemmott, 17, of Pinellas Park.

The Camry struck Deetz, who was not in a marked crosswalk. Deetz was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Jemmott suffered minor injuries.

There were no crossing signs at the accident location, deputies said. Deputies said no citations were issued.
