Tampa garbage truck strikes and badly injures bicyclist

TAMPA -- A city garbage truck ran into a bicyclist Monday morning sending him to the hospital in critical condition.

The collision happened about 7:30 a.m. as a city of Tampa Solid Waste truck headed east on Hanna Avenue before turning north on 24th Street, according to Tampa police. At the same time, the bicyclist was heading west on Hanna Avenue, crossing 24th Street. The driver of the truck did not see the cyclist crossing and ran into him, police said. The bicyclist was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital.

Police said Monday afternoon they were trying to confirm the identify of the cyclist, who they said is homeless.
