Bicyclist critically injured after colliding with car in Clearwater

CLEARWATER — A bicyclist was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries early Saturday after being struck by a vehicle, police said.

Daniel R. Rothwell, 60, of Clearwater, collided with a 2003 Mercedes Benz at about 1 a.m. at Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard and Lake Avenue.

"Alcohol is believed to be a factor on the part of the bicyclist," Elizabeth Watts, the city's public safety spokeswoman, said in a news release.

Both Rothwell and the vehicle's driver, Ronald F. Hale, 60, of Clearwater, were westbound on Gulf-to-Bay.

Rothwell was riding a bike with no lights on the sidewalk, police said.

Police said Hale turned onto Lake Avenue just as Rothwell was crossing it. The two collided.

Rothwell was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, where he was listed in critical but stable condition Saturday afternoon, hospital officials said.

No other details about the crash were released.
