TAMPA — A bicyclist was killed Wednesday afternoon after leaving the bike lane on U.S. 41 and colliding with a van, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The bicyclist, who troopers have not yet identified, died at the scene.

Luis Ortiz, 35, of Tampa was driving a 2003 Ford van northbound on U.S. 41 south of Madison Avenue, the FHP said. The bicyclist was traveling southbound in the northbound bike lane.

The FHP said the bicyclist crossed into traffic for "unknown reasons" about 3:40 p.m. The front of the van struck the bicyclist, who was not wearing a helmet.

The FHP investigation is continuing, but the agency said alcohol was not a factor in the incident.
