Motorcyclist killed in collision near St. Joseph's Hospital

TAMPA — A woman was killed Thursday morning when the motorcycle she was riding on was hit by a van near St. Joseph's Hospital.

The collision happened about 8 a.m. near N Habana Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Charrise Tosha Griffith-Melendez, 37, of Tampa, was riding south on Habana Avenue in the outside lane when she veered left into the inside lane, police said. At the same time, the van was turning right out of Legend Oaks Apartments at 4714 Habana Avenue. The bike and the van collided near the center lane.

Griffith-Melendez was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The driver of the van, Enrique Acosta, 76, of Tampa, was not injured, police said.

Traffic on Habana Avenue north of the intersection was blocked for several hours as police investigated the crash.
