THONOTOSASSA — A bicyclist was killed Friday morning by a hit-and-run dump truck driver on U.S. 301, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Patrick A. Statam, 50, of Thonotosassa was pedaling on U.S. 301 north of Fowler Avenue against traffic on the road's northbound shoulder, said patrol spokesman Larry Kraus. Meanwhile, a dump truck was heading west on E Fowler approaching U.S. 301.

The bicyclist tried to cross the intersection, and the truck crashed into him and ran him over about 6:50 a.m., Kraus said.

The truck kept driving, turning left onto U.S. 301 and heading south, Kraus said. The bicyclist died at the scene.

Troopers ask that anyone with information about the dump truck, which may have a blue cab, call the Florida Highway Patrol at (813) 632-6859, ext. 349, or toll-free at 1-800-873-8477.
