Boater who fell overboard missing in Lake Tarpon

EAST LAKE -- A 70-year-old man was missing in Lake Tarpon late Saturday after he jumped off a pontoon to save his dog, which had fallen into the water, deputies said.

The man, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, was with three other people when he jumped off the boat just before 4 p.m, The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said. The dog returned safely to the boat but the man disappeared under water, authorities said.

Searchers used helicopters, sonar and boats to find the man. The search was focused on the area of the lake near John Chesnut Sr. Park, located at 2200 East Lake Road.

Authorities temporarily called off the search around 10:30 p.m. because of low visibility, but said efforts would resume the next morning.

Deputies urged boaters and visitors in the area to call if they see anything suspicious.
