Brooksville man killed after branch falls on pickup during storm

BROOKSVILLE — A 59-year-old Brooksville man was killed Monday evening after a branch from a tree fell on top of his pickup as he drove on Snow Memorial Highway, causing him to lose control and strike another tree, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Billy Mullins was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Highway Patrol, Mullins was driving a 1989 Dodge Ram south on Snow Memorial Highway, just north of U.S. 41 north of Brooksville. While passing under a tree, a branch broke and hit the top of the vehicle. He lost control and hit a tree along the east shoulder of the roadway.

Heavy thunderstorms with wind gusts in the 40- to 50-mph range were rolling through the Brooksville area about the time of the crash, according to the National Weather Service.
