Car plunges off Courtney Campbell

CLEARWATER — Two people in a Jeep veered off the Courtney Campbell Causeway and into Tampa Bay this morning, but they escaped serious injury, authorities said.

The accident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. on the westbound side of the causeway, just west of the Pinellas-Hillsborough County line. The two people in the black Jeep were able to get out on their own, said Tampa Fire Capt. Jace Kohan. One was treated for minor injuries.

Although the accident happened on the Pinellas side of the line, Tampa police were investigating because the Tampa Police Department's dive team was called out to the scene. Late this morning, the dive team was retrieving the vehicle, which was completely submerged.
