Clearwater bicyclist killed by pickup truck in Oldsmar

OLDSMAR — A 29-year-old Clearwater man was killed Friday night when a pickup truck ran over him, deputies say.

Vitalii Karpenko was riding east on the 3600 block of Tampa Road about 9:45 p.m. when William Cowan, 53, of Tampa, pulled out of a driveway in his Dodge Ram to make a westbound turn, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said. After the collision, Karpenko was pinned underneath the truck and suffered fatal injuries, investigators said.

Detectives said alcohol might be a factor in the crash but were still investigating. Additional details were not released.
