Coast Guard rescues two St. Petersburg boaters after catamaran capsizes

ST. PETERSBURG — The Coast Guard rescued two St. Petersburg men from a capsized catamaran Sunday about 3 miles east of the St. Petersburg Pier, officials said.

The two men called the Coast Guard about 5 p.m. Sunday. They were clinging to the capsized Hobe Catamaran. One of the men was apparently able to still use his cell phone, according to the Coast Guard.

A 25-foot rescue boat arrived about 5:07 p.m. Steven Ellis and another unidentified boater were not injured.

Coast Guard officials said a commercial towing vessel removed the catamaran Sunday night.
