Condition of teen hurt in Hernando crash improves

TAMPA — Andrew Frank Morris, the 16-year-old who was driving an SUV that killed a well-known sheriff's captain, was upgraded Saturday to serious but stable condition at St. Joseph's Hospital.

Morris, a junior at Nature Coast Technical High School, was previously listed in critical condition. His family said doctors placed their son in a medically induced coma after 8 1/2 hours of surgery Thursday night.

Early that morning, about midnight, authorities believe, Morris left his Weeki Wachee home in his parents' 2002 Mitsubishi Montero without their permission.

Capt. Scott Bierwiler, 42, was driving on Powell Road, heading to work in Brooksville two hours early. About 5:45 a.m., authorities said, the teen's SUV crossed the center line and struck Bierwiler's unmarked patrol car head-on.

Bierwiler died instantly. The Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating.
