PALM HARBOR — A 39-year-old construction worker was rushed to the hospital after being hit by a car on U.S. 19 late Sunday, troopers said.

Samuel Delgado, 39, of Tampa and several other construction workers were moving equipment from the southwest corner of U.S. 19 and Tampa Road to the southeast corner of the intersection about 9:40 p.m., troopers said.

The workers were in the crosswalk when Frank Vincent Fatica, 23, approached them in his 2007 Subaru Impreza.

Fatica saw the workers and tried to brake and steer clear of the men and the equipment, officials said, but was unable to do so.

He collided with Delgado, who suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Bayfront Medical Center, troopers said. Delgado remains in critical condition.

No other construction workers were injured.

Troopers estimate the Subaru had about $3,500 in damage.

An investigation is ongoing.
