Crash near Tampa claims 7th bay area bicyclist in four months

TAMPA — A bicyclist died Monday after he was struck by a truck entering Fowler Avenue from Interstate 75, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash marks the seventh fatality involving bicyclists in the Tampa Bay area in the last four months.

Anthony G. Weeks, 33, of Thonotossassa, was riding his bicycle against traffic around 4:30 p.m. in the painted roadway area near where the westbound exit of I-75 and Fowler Avenue merge. He was struck by a pickup truck driven by Michael J. Larmeau, the patrol said.

Larmeau, 49, of Apollo Beach, had crossed the painted triangular piece of roadway separating the exit from Fowler Avenue, and hit the front of Weeks' bicycle, the patrol said.

Weeks, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the bike. Larmeau was not injured.

The investigation continues.
