13-year-old saves cousin from pool

Deputies are crediting a 13-year-old boy with rescuing his 5-year-old cousin from drowning at an apartment pool in eastern Hillsborough County on Tuesday. The incident happened at Fairview Cove Apartments about 4 p.m., when the young girl started sinking in the water, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Seeing his cousin start to founder, the boy jumped into the water and pulled her out, spokesman Larry McKinnon said.

Someone at the pool saw the incident and called medical services, McKinnon said, but the girl had been taken home and was quietly resting in her family's apartment by the time they arrived.

No one was injured, McKinnon said. The girl spat up water but was otherwise fine.
