Deputies identify 51-year-old corrections officer killed in fiery Lithia crash

LITHIA — Deputies identified the 51-year-old man Thursday who investigators said died in a fiery crash this week when struck by a drunken driver.

Brian Alton McGriff of Lithia was pronounced dead at the scene just before 11 p.m. Tuesday. His 1989 Honda was rear-ended by Jeffrey Scott Bair, 46, on County Road 39 near Old Welcome Road, officials said.

McGriff's Honda spun off the road, rolled into a ditch and was engulfed in flames, deputies said.

McGriff, who worked as a Florida Department of Corrections officer, died of smoke inhalation, according to an autopsy performed by the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner's Office.

Bair remained in jail Thursday on charges of DUI manslaughter.
