Driver critical after hitting Hillsborough County school bus

RUSKIN — A woman driving a car that rear-ended a Hillsborough County school bus Monday afternoon in Ruskin is in critical condition, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

At about 5 p.m., a Ford Crown Victoria driven by Thresa Marie Kovatch, 43, hit the back of a bus on U.S. 41 that was carrying four children ages 12 to 16, the patrol reported.

Because the bus is much higher, her car kept traveling underneath. None of the bus's occupants was seriously injured, but one student was taken to a hospital as a precaution, said patrol spokesman Larry Kraus.

Kovatch was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital, where she was in critical condition Tuesday evening, the patrol said.

"She'll probably be okay, but she has serious injuries," Kraus said.

College Avenue west of U.S. 41 was closed for several hours. The crash is still under investigation.
