BRANDON — A driver who blew through a red light at about 60 mph hit a car and killed its driver Tuesday morning, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
About 9:20 a.m., 36-year-old Terrance Mitchell of Riverview was traveling east on Falkenburg Road in the Brandon area. Witnesses estimated he was going about 60 mph — 15 mph over the speed limit — and said he did not stop at a red light at Crescent Park Drive, deputies said.
Mitchell's Dodge pickup hit the driver's door of a Pontiac driven by Scott Elliot Valentino, 40, of Riverview.
Valentino, who died at the scene, had a green light and had been making a right turn onto Falkenburg Road, deputies said.
Investigators took a blood sample from Mitchell at the scene and said it does not appear alcohol was a factor in the crash. He was taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.
Mitchell has not been charged in the crash, which deputies continue to investigate.
State driving records show that Mitchell has been convicted of speeding five times and driving without a valid license twice since 2000.
Additionally, the records show, adjudication was withheld on another citation of driving without a valid license and a citation of failing to obey a traffic sign or signal.
