Driver involved in fatal Largo crash identified

LARGO — Authorities have identified the driver involved in a hit-and-run crash Thursday night in which a pedestrian was killed.

Daniel E. Tovey, 33, of Largo, was behind the wheel of the silver pickup truck that struck and killed a man Thursday night near Ulmerton and Belcher roads, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said Friday.

Charges are pending further investigation, officials said.

Tony Allen Sorenson, 41, of Fort Myers, was walking north across Ulmerton shortly after 8 p.m. when he was hit by a westbound vehicle, FHP spokesman Sgt. Larry Kraus said.

The driver of the vehicle, a 2004 silver Ford F-150, continued on Ulmerton and fled the scene. Sorenson was pronounced dead at Largo Medical Center.

Officials asked for the public's help in finding the truck and its driver. It was unclear Friday night what led them to Tovey.
