Driver killed in State Road 39 crash was Plant City teen

PLANT CITY — The Florida Highway Patrol has identified the person killed in a traffic crash involving a semitrailer truck early Friday.

Blake Aaron Elrod, 17, was driving a Honda Civic west on Knights Griffin Road about 2 a.m. before running a red light at State Road 39 and striking the truck, operated by Davis Transfer of Georgia, troopers said.

The car skidded underneath the body of the truck and caught fire.

Elrod, of Plant City, died at the scene.

The driver of the trailer, 63-year-old Lakeland resident Mack O'Dell Toole, was not hurt. The truck sustained $15,000 in fire damage.
