Truck driver in I-75 crash out of hospital

The driver of the semitrailer that plunged off southbound Interstate 75 into the marsh of the Alafia River Friday afternoon was released from the hospital Friday night, according to a nursing supervisor.

Jeffery Scott Cook, 29, of St. Augustine, was taken to Tampa General Hospital with serious injuries after the wreck. His semitrailer, which was transporting a bulldozer, plummeted 45 feet after a mechanical failure caused him to lose control and collide with a concrete barrier, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A Hillsborough sheriff's deputy and reserve firefighter/EMT with Hillsborough County Fire Rescue came to his aide.

The inside southbound lane of I-75 was closed for about four hours as authorities removed the wreckage.
