ST. PETERSBURG — A man was hospitalized with serious injuries after police said a drunken driver hit him late Saturday while he was crossing the road.

At about 6:15 p.m., a 2003 Lincoln Aviator driven by Joseph Kenneth Deegan, 45, was traveling eastbound in the 3000 block of Fifth Avenue N, according to St. Petersburg police. A man who police have not identified pending notification to family members was crossing the road at 29th Street N. There is no crosswalk at the intersection, police said.

Deegan did not see the man, police said, and his SUV struck him. The man was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with life-threatening injuries. Officers determined Deegan was driving drunk. He was arrested on a DUI causing serious bodily injury charge and booked into the Pinellas County Jail, where he was released Sunday morning after meeting $5,000 bail.
