RUSKIN — An elementary school student who was walking to her school bus Friday morning was struck by a car, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

6-year-old Maria Elana Hernandez-Cruz, a student at Cypress Creek Elementary School, was approaching her parked school bus when Angel Palix, 24, of Ruskin didn't stop at the bus stop sign. The two didn't see each other and the side of Palix's vehicle clipped Maria.

Maria was taken to South Bay Hospital with minor injuries, the sheriff's office said. Palix was cited for failing to stop for a school bus with the stop signal displayed.
