ST. PETERSBURG — A family was unharmed after making an emergency landing at Albert Whitted Airport downtown just after takeoff Thursday morning.
John Erickson, 54, of Gulfport, was heading to the Bahamas with his wife, two daughters and a friend about 9:45 a.m. when their 1977 Piper Lance lost power in the air, said St. Petersburg Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Joel Granata.
Erickson managed to quickly land the plane on a grassy median dividing the runways, Granata said. The landing damaged the plane's propeller and landing gear, but not much else.
The family was unloading their bags from the plane about 10 a.m. No one needed medical treatment.
