A Pinellas Park man died early Friday morning after he was struck by a car on U.S. 19 in Clearwater, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

At 2:33 a.m., Eric Babcock, 29, of Clearwater, was driving a 2016 Toyota Corolla in the northbound center lane of U.S. 19 approaching Ulmerton Road, troopers said.

Around the same time, James Anthony Speaks, 53, was walking westbound across the northbound lanes of U.S. 19, the FHP said.

Speaks stepped into the path of the car and was struck, the FHP said. He died at the scene.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, troopers said.

The crash forced northbound lanes of U.S. 19 to close at Ulmerton Rod for several hours early Friday morning.
