Fatal crash diverts traffic on I-75 in Pasco County

WESLEY CHAPEL — A Brooksville man was killed in a crash early Monday that tied up traffic for hours on Interstate 75 near the State Road 56 exit.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Charles Hostetter Jr., 36, was driving a Dodge Dakota pickup in the outside southbound lane about 6:40 a.m. Two tractor-trailers were traveling in the center lane beside him. Hostetter tried to move into the center lane behind the first semi, which was towing a "low boy" trailer. He struck the rear of the trailer, rotated a half turn and was hit on the driver's side by the second semi.

Hostetter died at the scene, FHP said. The drivers of the two semis — Michael Hakey of Fremont, Ind., and Quintin Travis of Midwest City, Okla. — were not injured.

Traffic was backed up past State Road 52 hours later. Authorities were diverting traffic onto State Roads 54 and 56.
