Fatal vehicle accidents down in Florida; deaths of motorcyclists, bicyclists rise

TAMPA — Fatal vehicle crashes in Florida decreased by about 2 percent in 2011, according to a Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles report released Monday.

But fatalities among motorcyclists and bicyclists increased, the latter dramatically.

Fatalities of motorcyclists and their passengers rose from 383 to 451. Bicyclist fatalities increased about 58 percent, from 76 to 120.

Also, fatalities among teen drivers and their passengers increased in 2011 by 7 percent, from 144 to 154, compared with 2010 data, the report states. And alcohol was suspected in more fatal accidents — 828 in 2011, an increase of about 11 percent.

Alcohol was suspected in more total Hillsborough crashes (about 1,400) and Hernando accidents (about 170) in 2011 than in the previous year, while it was suspected in fewer Pinellas crashes (about 1,100) and Pasco accidents (about 400), compared with 2010 data.

The number of fatal accidents remained fairly steady in 2011 in Hillsborough (151) and Hernando (29). Fatal accidents declined in Pasco (from 75 to 64) and increased in Pinellas (from 96 to 112).
