ST. PETERSBURG — Troopers identified the Leesburg family involved in a drunken driving crash Friday night on the Howard Frankland Bridge.
Robert Getter, 76, Karen Getter, 73, and Samuel Getter, 52, were traveling east in the inside lane of Interstate 275 near Milepost 33 in a 2012 GMC Sierra, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Joshua Burbank, 25, was driving under the influence in the same direction in his 2014 Honda Civic.
Burbank, in the center lane, lost control of his car, which entered the inside lane. The left front of his Honda hit the right back of the family's truck, troopers said. The truck flipped several times before it went over the southern barrier and into two feet of water below.
Robert Getter, who was driving the truck, and Karen Getter, his wife, died at the scene, according to FHP. Samuel Getter died soon after he was taken to Tampa General Hospital with critical injuries. They were all wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Burbank, of Wesley Chapel, was arrested on charges of DUI manslaughter, DUI property damage and careless driving, troopers said. He was released Saturday night from the Pinellas County Jail after posting $61,000 bail.
