A motorcyclist was killed Tuesday night after he crashed into an SUV while speeding on the Gandy Bridge, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Around 11 p.m., troopers said Jan G. Melendez-Miranda, 20, of Largo, was riding westbound at a high rate of speed in the inside lane just east of San Fernando Boulevard when he started gaining on a 2007 Honda CRV driven by 18-year-old Michael Guntert, of Tampa.

Melendez-Miranda struck the back of the SUV and was ejected from the motorcycle, which then flipped and caught fire, troopers said.

The SUV rotated and hit the inside concrete barrier wall, troopers said.

Guntert and a passenger, 18-year-old Jordan Waits of Largo, were not injured troopers said.

Melendez-Miranda was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, where he later died, troopers said.
