A veteran Florida Highway Patrol trooper was hit and killed Saturday while investigating a crash on Interstate 75 north of Gainesville.

Sgt. William T. Bishop, 52, was outside his patrol vehicle when he was struck during a two-car collision, the patrol said. He worked as a trooper for 30 years.

Bishop, a husband and father, "put the well-being of those he serves above his own to keep Florida roadways safe," said a statement from FHP and the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. "This is a tragedy that highlights the risks that FHP troopers encounter every day as they serve our state."

According to the crash report, a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu involved in a previous crash was parked in the southbound inside emergency lane about 15 miles north of Gainesville. In the center lane, a 2007 Cadillac STS driven by John C. Sams, 67, was traveling behind a 2016 Ford Fusion with 46-year-old Michael T. Korta at the wheel.

About 6:30 p.m., the Cadillac rear-ended the Ford, said FHP Lt. Patrick Riordan. Bishop, outside his patrol car investigating the first crash, was hit in the collision.

He was rushed via ambulance to Shands at the University of Florida, where he was pronounced dead.

Sams, of Lady Lake, was taken to Shands with minor injuries. Korta, of Tampa, and Steven D. Catanach, the driver of the Malibu, were not hurt.

The crash remains under investigation. Riordan said it will be a "long and thorough" investigation that could take between three and four months.
