Four students hurt when Hillsborough school bus rear-ended

TAMPA — Four middle school students were taken to the hospital with minor injuries Thursday afternoon after a van crashed into the back of a school bus, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash occurred shortly before 5 p.m. on the northbound exit ramp to U.S. 301 from eastbound Interstate 4.

The school bus was transporting 23 students from Jennings Middle School in Seffner. It had come to a stop on the ramp when it was struck from behind by a GMC van driven by Charles Schell, 49, of Plant City, according to the patrol.

Four of the students were transported to St. Joseph's Hospital with what the patrol described as minor injuries.

The remaining students were placed aboard another school bus to continue the route.

Schell was not injured and was cited with careless driving, troopers said.
