BROOKSVILLE — An elderly man driving a golf cart was struck and killed Tuesday afternoon as he tried to turn in front of a pickup on U.S. 19, authorities said.
Thomas J. Lashinsky, 84, of Brooksville was northbound on the highway at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday when he decided to change lanes and turn in front of a 1996 Ford truck near Hexam Road, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Lashinsky had been going about 10 mph, FHP said.
The front of the Ford hit the left side of the golf cart, which then became lodged on the truck. Lashinsky was ejected onto the pavement, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at Bayonet Point Medical Center.
The truck traveled across the southbound lanes and ended up on the western shoulder of the roadway. Its driver, Casey Kevin Stargel, 62, of Brooksville, was not injured.
