TAMPA — A county bus driver who was cited Monday for making an improper turn that led to a crash injuring nine people has a good driving record, a Hillsborough Area Regional Transit spokeswoman said.
According to HART spokeswoman Sandra Morrison, the only recorded infraction for driver Juan Washington, 48, was in his first year as a driver with HART. He was backing up in a bus depot in March 2010 when his bus hit another parked bus.
Since then, he has earned three consecutive annual safety awards from HART, records show.
The crash Monday took place on 56th Street, near the Netpark Tampa Bay business park. Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Steve Gaskins said Washington turned left into traffic and struck a Volvo sedan.
Washington, the Volvo driver and seven bus passengers suffered varying injuries and were transported to hospitals. Morrison said Washington was released from Tampa General Hospital on Monday night but is still undergoing evaluation.
A HART investigation is ongoing, and Morrison said it is not clear if Washington will return to the driver's seat soon.
