Hernando Sheriff's deputy injured in early morning crash

RIDGE MANOR — A Hernando County Sheriff's deputy was injured Saturday morning when a car slammed into his patrol car east of Brooksville, authorities said.

Deputy James Baker was traveling west on Cortez and entered the intersection of U.S. 301 about 4:45 a.m., the Sheriff's Office said. A car heading north on 301 collided with the driver's side door of his patrol car. Two people inside the car that hit Baker fled the scene and were later located by deputies.

Baker was flown by medical helicopter to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. Authorities have not released information about his injuries or condition.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. No other details were immediately available.
