Hillsborough patrol car involved in U.S. 301 crash

TAMPA — A Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office patrol car was involved in a traffic crash Friday morning on U.S. 301, officials said.

The crash was reported just after 7 a.m. near the Balm Road intersection.

The patrol car was rear-ended by another car, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said. Firefighters had to extract the deputy from the car because the doors would not open.

The deputy, who has not been identified, was hospitalized after he complained about back pain, the sheriff's office said. The other driver was not hurt.

U.S. 301 south of Balm Road was shut down in both directions as deputies investigated the crash. Traffic may be shut down for about an hour, the sheriff's office said.

Drivers were advised to seek alternate routes.
