I-4 exit ramp near Columbus and 50th closes after two trucks collide

TAMPA — The eastbound Interstate 4 exit ramp for 50th Street and Columbus Avenue was closed early Saturday afternoon after one truck rear-ended another and clogged up an intersection.

Around 1 p.m., a box truck that had exited the interstate was waiting to cross 50th Street. Another box truck rumbled down the exit ramp, but instead of stopping, smashed into the back of the first truck, according to a report from Tampa Fire Rescue.

The driver in the rear truck, who name wasn't released, was trapped in his vehicle, the report states. A heavy rescue unit had to free him from the truck using a claw.

The man was then transported to Tampa General Hospital on trauma alert. Two other people on scene were also transported to St. Joseph's Hospital in an ambulance, the report states.

The exit ramp was closed until Tampa Police Department cleared the scene.
