In Tampa, driver hospitalized after SUV collides with van carrying jail inmates

TAMPA — Police are investigating a head-on collision at Broadway Avenue and 70th Street involving a van carrying jail inmates.

A red Saturn SUV collided with a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office van carrying eight inmates at about 7 a.m.

The driver of the Saturn, a woman in her mid-20s whose name has not been released, was taken to Tampa General Hospital in critical but stable condition, according to the Tampa Police Department.

The inmates, mostly in jail for violating probations, were all accounted for and had only minor injuries.

TPD says a preliminary investigation shows that the Saturn crossed the center lane and caused the crash.

Traffic is slowed in the area while officers investigate further. No other details are yet known.
