A 32-year-old construction worker was injured Friday when a heavy piece of equipment flipped over and pinned his leg to the ground, authorities said.

The worker was operating a machine similar to a Bobcat inside a vacant building at 400 Cleveland St. when the vehicle "flipped into an open elevator shaft and came to rest upside down on one of his legs," said Clearwater public safety spokesman Rob Shaw.

The Clearwater Fire & Rescue Department's technical rescue team responded and used airbags to lift the equipment and free the man's leg.

The man, who is from Brooksville and has not been identified, was flown to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg. He suffered a severe lower left leg injury, Shaw said.
