Injured 13-year-old cyclist returns home after hit-and-run crash

NEW PORT RICHEY — A 13-year-old New Port Richey girl has returned home from the hospital after being injured Friday in what authorities described as a hit-and-run crash on U.S. 19.

Brena Carter was riding a bicycle on a sidewalk along the highway about 4 p.m. Friday near Avery Road when a Toyota Camry rolled out of a driveway and slammed into her, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The driver pulled onto the highway and continued north a short distance before making a U-turn and fleeing south, leaving the injured girl behind.

Carter was taken to St. Joseph's Children's Hospital in Tampa, where she was treated before being released Sunday.

Investigators are still searching for the driver of the car that hit her. Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to call the Florida Highway Patrol at (813) 631-4020.
