A lightning strike sparked an early morning blaze that damaged a house in Brandon, according to Hillsborough County fire officials.
The fire was reported about 7:45 a.m. at the home at 1720 Woodhaven Drive, officials said. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames engulfing a bedroom area. They quickly extinguished the blaze.
A subsequent investigation revealed signs of a lightning strike near where the fire happened. Residents of the house, who were asleep at the time of the strike, awoke upon hearing their dogs barking and smoke alarms chirping, officials said. They escaped safely and no one was injured.
