Lutz woman dead after south Hillsborough crash

TAMPA — A woman died Friday night after losing control of her vehicle on Interstate 75 near the Manatee County line, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Mary Griffin Skau, 71, of Lutz, was driving in the inside lane of southbound I-75 just before 7 p.m. when her 2003 Ford Explorer veered onto the shoulder, FHP said. Skau overcorrected the SUV and it spun and veered to the outside shoulder of the road. The SUV then hit several trees and flipped onto its right side, FHP said.

Skau was transported to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton with critical injuries and died later in the night, FHP said.

Skau was not wearing a seat belt, FHP said. The crash is under investigation.
