Man, 20, dies in Wesley Chapel motorcycle crash

WESLEY CHAPEL — A 20-year-old man is dead after a Wednesday morning motorcycle crash on State Road 54.

Darren Richard Derby of Lutz was headed west on a Suzuki GSX-R600 in the outside lane of S.R. 54 near Oakley Boulevard at 7:05 a.m., according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. At the same time, Kayla Lancaster, 22, of Wesley Chapel, was headed eastbound on the same road and stopped to turn left onto northbound Oakley Boulevard. She waited at the intersection for a van in the inside westbound lane to pass, the report states, then turned into the path of the motorcycle, which rammed the left side of the Mazda that Lancaster was driving.

Derby, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle, the report states. He was pronounced dead on scene.

An investigation is ongoing.
