TARPON SPRINGS — Police arrested a man they say drove away after hitting and seriously injuring a pedestrian Friday evening in the Sponge Docks area.

George T. Green, 35, of 424 Pent St., Tarpon Springs, was arrested on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident that had caused serious bodily injuries.

The victim, whose identity was not released Friday night, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital with very serious injuries, authorities said.

According to police, the pedestrian was walking north on Arfaras Boulevard near Dodecanese Boulevard when Green hit him shortly after 5:30 p.m.

Green fled, police said, but officers quickly caught him a few minutes later.

"A witness actually followed him from the scene," said Tarpon Springs police Lt. Barb Templeton.

A preliminary investigation revealed Green and the victim are acquainted, Templeton said.

No other details were released Friday night.
