LARGO — Alcohol was to blame for a New Year's Eve traffic crash that killed a motorcyclist in Largo, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Steven Lee Clarke, 59, was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence-manslaughter late Thursday night after a crash left 31-year-old Matthew Deremer dead, officials said.

Clarke was heading east in a 2012 Lincoln just before 8 p.m. on 102nd Avenue N. As he got to the intersection of 98th Street, Deremer was heading west, through the same intersection on a 2007 Suzuki motorcycle, troopers said. Clarke turned left, into the bike's path. The vehicles collided.

Deremer died at the scene of the crash.

An investigation found Clarke was driving under the influence of alcohol, said troopers, who did not provide his blood-alcohol level or an explanation for the charge. Clarke was booked into the Pinellas County jail hours later.
