Man dies after collision with pickup and hit-and-run tow truck in Pasco

DADE CITY — An 83-year-old man was killed Thursday night after his truck collided with another pickup and was then rammed by a hit-and-run tow truck.

Joe D. Sampson of Trilby was pronounced dead after the 8:18 p.m. crash at U.S. 301 and U.S. 98.

Here's what troopers say happened:

Sampson was traveling east on U.S. 98, trying to turn left on to U.S. 301. His 2004 Chevy Silverado crossed into the path of 39-year-old James S. Cramer's pickup and the two vehicles collided.

Sampson's car was disabled and came to a stop in the southbound lanes of U.S. 301. About 30 seconds to one minute after the crash, a tow truck smashed into the left side of the truck, pushing it several feet.

The tow truck fled the scene and was last seen going south on U.S. 301. Witnesses saw the tow truck, possibly red with a brush guard attached to the front, has heavy front-end damage.

Troopers ask that anyone with information contact the Florida Highway Patrol at (813) 631-4020.
