ST. PETERSBURG — An elderly man was killed on Wednesday night when he was struck by a car after walking into oncoming traffic, according to St. Petersburg police.
Police said Confeser Cruz, 85, was crossing eastbound on Fourth Street N, in the middle of the 6600 block, around 8 p.m. when he crossed the median and entered the northbound lanes against oncoming traffic.
He was struck in the curb lane by Jose Tayagui, 74, who was driving northbound in a 2014 Kia Optima.
The front of the Kia struck Cruz, police said, throwing him up onto the vehicle and into the roadway.
Cruz was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, where he later died, police said.
Alcohol was not a factor and no charges are expected, police said.
