WIMAUMA — A local post office was evacuated Wednesday morning after a car careened into the building.
Deputies said there was "major structural damage" to the building at State Highway 674 and Sheffield Street after a car jumped the curb and ran into the post office wall.
The car shattered the window located directly in front of the customer counter and damaged the wall, toppling over a mailbox inside the building. The driver, identified only as an elderly man, was not harmed and no one inside was injured, deputies said.
The driver told deputies he accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake, said Enola Rice, spokeswoman for the United States Postal Service in Tampa.
The location employs 11 people and delivers to 3,500 homes throughout eastern Hillsborough County, Rice said. It will reopen for business at 9 a.m. Thursday.
