Man drowns in Lake Ellen

TAMPA — A 32-year-old man drowned in Lake Ellen Saturday after his canoe sank, deputies said.

Eric Jenkins picked up the canoe at the Country Woods Apartments, where he lived, and went out on the lake with a friend, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's office.

An hour later, the canoe started to sink, the friend told deputies.

A nearby boater was able to pull the friend out of the water but Jenkins slipped under the surface.

Deputies arrived just before 5:30 p.m. with a helicopter and divers. They found Jenkins an hour later and took him to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the sheriff's office.
