Man drowns off Madeira Beach park

MADEIRA BEACH — A decision to go swimming in the Gulf of Mexico led to a man drowning Friday night near Archibald Park in Madeira Beach, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.

The victim, a 66-year-old man, has not been identified.

Deputies said the man was walking with friends along the beach when he decided to go swimming. Shortly thereafter, witnesses found a man face down along the shoreline.

Rescue personnel took the victim to St. Petersburg General Hospital. He was later pronounced dead, deputies said.

Deputies said an autopsy will determine the cause and manner of death.

Archibald Park is at 15100 Gulf Blvd.
