Man falls 30 feet from Sunshine Skyway
A man fell 30 feet from a bridge after getting out of a vehicle that crashed near the Sunshine Skyway on Sunday night, St. Petersburg police said.
The man was one of three passengers in a single-vehicle crash at about 9:20 p.m. on the bridge approaching the Manatee County side of the Sunshine Skyway, spokeswoman Yolanda Fernandez said.
The passengers exited the sport utility vehicle and moved away from traffic. However, as the man was backing up, he hit the side barrier of the bridge and fell backward into the water, Fernandez said.
An officer at the scene estimated the fall to be at least 30 feet.
Witnesses flagged down a St. Petersburg police officer who was on his way into work, Fernandez said. St. Petersburg Fire Rescue units were called and rescued the man. He was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, but Fernandez said no information was available about the extent of his injuries.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
